A
MADE BY ANY OTHER NAME...
Names in Bali can be very confusing to Westerners. There
are basically only four first names. Traditionally, the
first child is named Wayan, the second is Made, the third
is Nyoman and the fourth is named Ketut. With the fifth,
the whole thing begins again with Wayan. These names are used for people of either
gender. In writing, male names are preceded with an I,
and females with Ni. The only common variation of this
pattern is that sometimes first-born boys are called Gede
and first-born girls can be called Putu.
Our Balinese assistant, I Made
(pronounced Mah-Day) Wisaya, is a second child. His older
sister is Wayan. Their surname is a Sanskrit word,
meaning clever, which he is. His wife is named Putu.
Made explained to us that the younger
generation is making some changes in the naming customs.
His first-born is a boy named Una, which also means
clever. Mades second child, Sarra, is named after
her zodiac sign, Cancer.
